Police have arrested Touhidul Islam, who opened fire at an anti-discrimination student protest in Chattogram.
He was arrested from Satkhira's Kamal Nagar area around 5:30pm on Friday, said Deputy Police Commissioner Rois Uddin in a press briefing at the Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s (CMP) media centre on Saturday (November 23).
“Touhidul alone fired a total of 28 bullets at protesters. A search operation is underway to recover the arms and ammunition from him. He has 12 cases against him, including 5 murder cases,” said Uddin.
Touhidul confessed that on order of Esrarul Haque, former councillor of Chandgaon ward in Chattogram, he fired on the protest.

More than 1,581 people were killed and over 31,000 injured in the student-led mass movement across the country, according to the Sub-Committee on Health, the National Citizens Committee.
What began as a protest against discriminatory public sector job quotas turned into a mass protest in mid-July. The government imposed an indefinite curfew, called out the army and cut off the internet to quell the protest.
The movement eventually turned into a mass uprising that forced Sheikh Hasina to resign and flee the country on August 5.
