Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina addressed the nation on Wednesday at 7:30 pm, expressing sorrow over the recent violent incidents related to the quota reform movement. She stated that certain groups have exploited the movement to engage in terrorist activities, resulting in the tragic and unnecessary loss of lives.
"Today I have appeared before you with a heavy heart. The incident of Komalmati students' movement is very painful and sad. How many precious lives were lost unnecessarily," she said in her address.
The Prime Minister highlighted the government's efforts to improve the living conditions of the people of Bangladesh, achieved through the sacrifices of countless martyrs. "We are working tirelessly for the self-social development of the people of independent Bangladesh, which has been achieved in exchange for the blood of lakhs of martyrs. To meet the basic needs of people, we have started providing better living conditions to the people by providing food, clothing, shelter, education, medical care. I have achieved a lot of success. I have been able to make Bangladesh sit on a prestigious seat in the world court. Then we have a long way to go."
She noted that the recent unrest has disrupted the peace that the people of Bangladesh had returned to, causing immense pain.
Referring to the student movement of 2018, Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the government had issued a circular canceling the quota system in government jobs. However, the High Court later annulled this circular in favor of the freedom fighters, prompting the government to appeal to the Supreme Court. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, students resumed their protests demanding the cancellation of the quota system. "Since the beginning of this movement, the government has shown considerable patience and tolerance," she added.
She also emphasized that the police have cooperated in ensuring the safety of the protesters. "When the agitators wished to submit memoranda to the President, they were given the opportunity. Security measures were taken."
Expressing her condolences, the Prime Minister said, "I wish the souls of those who have passed away to rest in peace. Deepest condolences to the family members. I condemn every killing."
