Time News Desk: At least 20 activists of the Bangladesh Chattra League were injured in a factional clash in Barguna over the observance of National Mourning Day on Monday.
The clash took place in front of the district Shilpakala Academy in the presence of Awami League lawmaker Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu.
Deprived BCL leaders and activists attacked those that held posts in the newly announced committee, according to the police.
Barguna district unit Chhatra League president Rezaul Kabir Reza said, ‘We were carrying out the National Mourning Day programme peacefully. The deprived BCL activists started throwing bricks at us as they did several times since the announcement of the new committee.’
Barguna district unit vice-president Sabuj Molla, who has been deprived of the post of president, however, denied the allegation.
‘Neither I nor our supporters were involved in the attack. We went there to attend the event, but suddenly the police started charging batons on us,’ he claimed.
Barguna additional superintendent of police SM Tarek Rahman said, ‘The police went there to maintain law and order, and dispersed the BCL groups engaged in factional clash. Later, a faction threw bricks at the police car from the second floor of the academy.’
They vandalised the car along with some motorcycles. Later, raids were conducted on Shilpakala Academy and launch ghat areas and some local weapons were recovered, said the police official.
Additional police have been deployed to important points in the town to bring the situation under control, he added.
Barguna 1 lawmaker Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu could not be reached over phone for comment despite several attempts.
