Bangladeshi Najma Rahman elected deputy mayor of UK’s Camden Council

Time Digital Report: Bangladeshi-origin British citizen Najma Rahman has been elected as the deputy mayor of the Camden Council in the United Kingdom.

Najma, who is from Bangladesh's Sylhet, was elected from among the councillors yesterday (May 16, 2022).

She will serve as the deputy mayor of the Camden Council for the next one year.

Najma, a nutritionist by profession, was elected councillor for the second term as a candidate of the Labour Party from the West Hampstead area in the local government elections held on May 5.

Earlier, in the elections held on May 5, 2018, she was elected as a councillor for the first time from the same party.

Najma has been involved in the Labour Party politics in Britain for a period of time. She is the general secretary of the Labour Party's Kilburn and West Hampstead units. UK's Labour Party MP Tulip Rizwana Siddiq was elected lawmaker from this seat in the UK parliament.

Najma is the wife of Azadur Rahman Azad, councillor of Sylhet City Corporation and joint general secretary of Sylhet city Awami League.

The couple has two daughters and one son.

Their eldest daughter is working at Oxford University in the UK after completing her studies there. Their son has been studying at the university. The younger daughter is one and a half years old.
