FIFA World Cup trophy in Bangladesh

News Desk: The World Cup football trophy arrived in Bangladesh capital Dhaka for a 36-hour tour on Wednesday accompanied by a seven-member FIFA delegation, including former French World Cup winner Christian Karembeu.

Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin and other officials received the trophy at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after it arrived from Pakistan at 11:00am.

The trophy was first taken to Radisson Blu Dhaka Water Garden amid tight security before it was taken to Bangabhaban and Ganabhaban, respectively the official residence of president M Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

The trophy will be displayed for limited spectators at the Bangladesh Army Stadium on Thursday afternoon when a few selected guests and winners of Coca Cola draws will get an opportunity to take pictures with it, BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag told reporters.

This is the third time the trophy is visiting Bangladesh. It previously toured Bangladesh in 2002 and 2013.

The trophy started its global tour on May 12 from Dubai intending to spread the message of peace.

FIFA sponsor Coca-Cola kicked off the journey in presence of former World Cup winners Iker Casillas of Spain and Kaka of Brazil. The trophy will visit 51 countries and territories, including 32 World Cup participants.

Bangladesh finished fifth in their qualifying group and is ranked 188 currently.

Speaking to reporters at Radisson, Salahuddin, however, could not make any prediction when Bangladesh would be a genuine contender for a spot in the World Cup.

‘No one can tell. It [World Cup qualification] only depends on the players,’ he said. ‘We can only keep trying as organisers. We can work together for that,’ added the BFF president.

Salahuddin believed the tour of the World Cup trophy would boost Bangladeshi players.

‘We believe that the trophy tour will strengthen our footballers, club organisers,’ he said.

The trophy will leave for East Timur on Thursday.
