Five Covid death in 24hr after 111 days

News Desk: Bangladesh recorded five Covid deaths in a day in its 24-hour reporting period until 8:00 am on Friday after 111 days, according to the Directorate General of Health Services.

All five deaths occurred in Dhaka district among people aged above 40 years and two of them were women, the DGHS daily Covid situation report said.

The last time the DGHS reported five deaths in a day was on March 11, according to the DGHS.

In the latest reporting period the DGHS also detected 1,897 new cases as Bangladesh continued to witness a substantial spread of the disease amid health experts warning about a fresh outbreak of the pandemic unfolding.

It was for the 10th consecutive day that the daily Covid cases stayed above the 1,000 marks, which is a big change given that the daily Covid toll remained below 100, largely below 50, between late March and early June.

The test positivity rate stood at 15.31 per cent on Friday after 12,389 tests conducted over the latest reporting cycle.

The latest figures took the cumulative Covid deaths to 29,154 and cases to 1975682 ever since the disease was officially detected in the country on March 8, 2020.

Of the new cases, 1554 infections were reported by Dhaka division, followed by 144 infections detected in Chattogram, 71 new cases confirmed in Barishal, 43 in Khulna, 42 in Rajshahi, 20 in Mymensingh, 12 in Sylhet and 11 new cases in Rangpur division.
