The High Court today refused to grant bail to the former superintendent of police Babul Akter in a case filed over the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu in 2016.
The HC, however, issued a rule asking the state to explain in two weeks why Babul Akter, who is now in jail, should not be granted bail in the case.
The bench of AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo issued the rule following a petition filed by former SP Babul seeking bail in the case.
On June 5, 2016, Mitu was stabbed and shot dead while she was taking her son to the school bus stop in Chattogram city's GEC intersection. After the murder, Babul filed a case against three unidentified men at Panchlaish Police Station.
Later, the case was taken over by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) from the Detective Branch of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
On May 12 last year, Mitu's father filed a murder case against eight people, making Babul the prime accused in the case, alleging that he is the mastermind behind the murder. Mitu's father also alleged that Babul killed his wife over an extra-marital affair.
