Time Digital News: A court in Dhaka has sentenced SM Golam Kibria Shamim, popularly known as GK Shamim and his seven bodyguards to life imprisonment in the Arms Act case filed with Gulshan police station in the capital.

Dhaka’s Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Sheikh Chamidul Islam handed over the verdict on Sunday.

The other convicted accused are GK Shamim’s seven bodyguards Md. Zahidul Islam, Md. Shahidul Islam, Md. Kamal Hossain, Md. Samsad Hossain, Md. Aminul Islam, Md. Delwar Hossain and Md. Murad Hossain.

On September 20, 2019, GK Shamim was arrested at his office in the capital’s Gulshan along with seven bodyguards.

Later, three cases were lodged against GK Shamim under Arms, Drugs and Money Laundering Act. GK Shamim was mentioned as “an extortionist, tender hunter, illegal drug and gambling dealer” in the case report.

On October 27 of the same year, Sub-Inspector Shekhar Chandra Mallik of RAB-1, the investigating officer of the case, filed a chargesheet in the arms case. On January 28, 2020, the same court rejected the acquittal of the accused and ordered the trial to begin by framing the complaint. During the trial, 10 witnesses testified in court at different times.

According to case documents, accused Aminul Islam has received the license from the Jamalpur DC’s, however, its proper documents were not verified. Later, he joined SM Builders Company in 2017 with the fake documents of that weapon.

Later in the middle of 2019, the accused joined and worked as GK Shamim’s bodyguard. He basically purchased the illegal weapon for Tk 70,000 and created documents through forgery.

Apart from this, the other accused have been licensed for arms on the pretext of security, however, they violated the conditions by openly carrying, displaying and using arms and creating fear among the people, through tendering, extortion, drug and gambling business and earned a huge amount of money anonymously.
