Govt reconstitutes trustee board of Manarat University

Time Digital Report: The trustee board of Manarat International University has been reconstituted with Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam in the chair.

Chancellor of the university President Abdul Hamid ordered the reorganisation of the 13-member board due to a breach of the Private University Act 2010, according to a release issued by the Ministry of Education on Thursday (8 September).

Wishing anonymity, an official of the ministry said that the university was being run by people who have been involved with religion-based politics for a long time.

Because of this, the government sought the president's approval for the reorganisation of the board of trustees to ensure discipline and quality education.

The new 13-member Board of Trustee was formed in a meeting held on Thursday at the Secondary and Higher Education Division (SHED).

Prof Sadeka Halim of the Sociology department of Dhaka University, who is among the members of the trustee board attended the meeting.

Prof Sadeka Halim, said the previous board was demolished following Section 35 (7), the Private Universities Act.

Other board of trustee members includes -- former senior secretary Hedayetullah Al Mamun, former senior secretary Sajjadul Hasan, National University Vice-Chancellor Moshiur Rahman, DU International Business Department Honourary Prof Khandkar Bazlul Haque, Canadian University of Bangladesh Prof Mohammad Ali Arafat, National Mental Health Institute and Hospital Prof Mekhla Sarker, former president and general secretary of Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) Engineer Md Abdur Sabur, DU Law department Prof Salim Mahmud, Hasumonir Pathshala President Marufa Akhtar Poppy, Bangladesh Mahila Samity Member Israt Jahan Nasreen and Social Improvement Society Executive Director Mihir Kanti Ghoshal.

Earlier on September 6, the SHED issued a letter, inviting 23 personalities to recast the board of trustees, saying in consent of President Abdul Hamid.
