The Dhaka University (DU) authorities have recommended that obtaining an PhD degree is must for its teachers to get promotion as professors and associate professors.

The recommendation was made at a meeting of the university's academic council on Monday and which will be given final approval to the University Syndicate.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman said the University Academic Council has taken this decision to enhance the quality and professional standards of the teachers.

He said PhD degree and higher research has been prescribed as a prerequisite for the promotion of the university teachers.
