Protests continuing against urea price hike

News Desk: Different left-leaning political parties on Thursday continued to protest against government’s decision on increasing urea fertiliser price.

The increase in fertiliser price hike will increase production cost of the agricultural products and it will increase sufferings of the farmers, leaders of the parties said.

The government on August 1 increased the price of urea by Tk 6 a kg from Tk. 16, setting the new price of urea at 22 kg for farmers.

United Communist League of Bangladesh and Workers Party of Bangladesh (Marxist) jointly organised a rally in front of the National Press Club, where UCLB general secretary Abdus Satter chaired.

Abdus Satter said that the government took decision to increase urea price hike to satisfy the International Monetary Fund from whom the government wanted to get new loan.

The increase in urea price will increase the sufferings of the farmers and it will be a threat to the food security of the country, Abdus Satter said.

Workers Party (Marxist) general secretary Iquebal Kabir Jahid, called on the government to withdraw the decision for ensuring food security of the country.

UCLB central leaders Shamim Imam, Nazrul Islam and others spoke at the rally.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Biplobi Krishok Samhati held a rally at Purana Paltan crossing where Revolutionary Workers Party general secretary Saiful Huq said that increase in urea price would increase sufferings of the farmers and he demanded withdrawal of the decision immediately.

Central leaders of the party Bannishikha Jamali, Akbar Khan, Rashida Begum and others spoke at the rally, where Krishok Samhati central leader Quamruzzaman Firoz chaired.

The rally was followed by a protest procession that paraded different city roads.

Bangladesh Krishok Mojur Samhati convener Dewan Abdur Rashid Nilu and member secretary Zonayed Saki in a press statement called on the government to control the price hike of urea.

They called on the government to continue subsidies in agriculture sector to ensure food security of the country.

Ganosamhati Dhaka city south will hold a protest rally at Mirpur-12, at 5:00pm, a press release of the organisation said.

Jatiya Krishok Samiti president Mahmudul Hasan Manik and general secretary Aminul Islam Golap in a press statement said that the government increased price of urea to satisfy the condition of the IMF, which would be suicidal for the country.

It will increase production cost of paddy and farmers will be discouraged to cultivate paddy, they said.
