The arrested are Sahura Khatun, 68, wife of Mozaher Ahmed, and her son Asmat Ullah, 24, said the RAB officials.
RAB-7 commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel MA Yusuf at a press briefing at RAB office at Chandgoan said that they arrested Sahura Khatun and her son Asmat Ullah at a rented house in Jungle Salimpur area on Saturday morning.
‘We recovered eight gold bars and some other gold ornaments worth Tk 1.53 crore from their possession,’ he said.
‘The arrested are Rohingya people and they were living in Bangladesh from 2012. Asmat Ullah, however, managed a Bangladeshi passport using the address of Edgoan in Cox’s Bazar and went to Saudi Arabia,’ the RAB officer said.
‘Asmat stayed in Saudi Arabia from 2014 to 2020. Saudi police arrested Asmat in 2020 and sent him back to Bangladesh for staying there illegally,’ he said.
‘The duo admitted that they were Rohingya people. We handed over them to the Sitakunda police for further action,’ he said.
