The fire at the “Manoshi Plaza” building of Farmgate in the capital has been brought under control after 8 hours.
Five units of the Fire Service worked tirelessly, and the fire was fully controlled by 5:10pm.
The fire broke out at 9:20am on Saturday in the building's basement.
Confirming the control of the fire, Shahjahan Sikdar, the officer-in-charge of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, said that the fire was not particularly severe. However, there was a lot of smoke in the basement, which delayed the firefighters' entry.
As a result, it took time to fully control the fire.
Lima Khanam, the duty officer at the Fire Service control room, confirmed the fire at 2pm.
She said that, according to initial reports, the basement of the building contains a large number of documents from Mercantile Bank. These documents were destroyed in the fire.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage are yet to be determined.
There have been no reports of casualties.
