Abontika blamed Amman for sexually harassing her
Police have found Jagannath University's Assistant Proctor Din Islam and Amman Siddique’s involvement in provoking the university’s law department student Fairuz Abontika to commit suicide.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Police Commissioner Mahid Uddin said this during a press conference on Sunday.
The police official said: "A case has been filed with Kotwali Model police station in Comilla for instigating Fairuz Abontika to commit suicide. Based on the case, two accused were arrested. They have already been handed over to the Comilla police.
“During the primary interrogation, the accused gave fragmented information about the incident. The full details can be disclosed after the investigation. The police have found their involvement to some extent, but the degree of their responsibility can not be stated at this moment,” he added.
Responding to a question, he said: “The Dhaka Metropolitan Police had been monitoring the situation from the beginning. With the permission of the Comilla district police, we made the arrests. The university administration has cooperated with us throughout these days.”
On Saturday night, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman confirmed the arrest of the university's assistant proctor Deen Islam and the student's classmate Amman Siddique in connection with the suicide of Abontika.
Fairuz Abontika, a student of the 2017-18 academic year of Jagannath University (JnU) Law Department, hanged herself at her Comilla residence after accusing her classmate and the assistant proctor of the university in a Facebook post around 10pm on Friday.
Meanwhile, the university administration relieved Assistant Proctor Deen Islam from her duty and suspended classmate Amman Siddique.
Besides, the university administration has formed a four-member probe committee.
In her Facebook post before committing suicide, Fairuz Abontika said that her classmate Amman Siddique and Assistant Proctor Deen Islam would be responsible for her suicide.
“If I ever die by suicide, my classmate Amman Siddique and Assistant Proctor Deen Islam, who supported him, will be solely responsible for my death. I complained to the proctor's office that Amman was threatening me offline and also online but I did not get any benefit. Deen Islam scares me in many ways for the sake of Amman. He said that expelling me is very easy for him. I know I will not get any justice here,” she wrote.
