Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday said that the independent candidates should carry out their own election campaigns while Awami League MP aspirants conduct theirs.
Urging unity among the Awami League and independent candidates, he said: "We all are Brothers and sisters, Stay united, do not fight. Independent candidates will conduct their election, and Awami League will conduct theirs. There is no need for anyone to fight with each other.”
The Awami League leader was speaking at the party’s inaugural election rally in Sylhet Alia Madrasa field on Wednesday.
Quader said: "To make this election competitive, fair, and participatory, our leader has also asked Awami League leaders who did not receive nominations to run as independent candidates. There is nothing to lose in this. The boat (Awami League’s electoral symbol) has its strength, who is there to fear?"
He further added: "If you lose your popularity in your constituency while being an MP, and then an independent candidate runs against you, what can we do? What is there for us to do? The Awami League candidates must maintain the dignity of the boat symbol."
