Tidal surge has caused saltwater to flood several villages

Cyclone Remal has wreaked havoc in Khulna as embankments have been breached at 36 places in Dakop, Paikgasa and Koyra upazilas.

The tidal surge has caused saltwater to flood several villages as Bangladesh Water Development Board embankments have been damaged in various polders of Paikgasa upazila.
On Monday morning, residents began efforts to repair the embankments and protect the polders.

Khulna Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Nazmul Hussein Khan said that the cyclone completely destroyed 10,500 houses and partially damaged another 16,905 houses.

The areas of Pankhali, Tildanga, and Sutarkhali have been hit severely, he added.

Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) BM Tarik-Uz-Zaman said that heavy rain has prevented people from leaving their homes, and erosion has been reported in the Dashhalia and Nayani areas. Immediate repairs have been undertaken to prevent the dam from overflowing.

Paikgasa Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mehera Naznin stated that 56 polling centers in Paikgasa upazila are currently being used as shelters due to Cyclone Remal. Of these, 24 are secondary schools, and 32 are primary schools.

The Paikgasa district is experiencing a complete power outage. Additionally, fallen trees have blocked several roads, and many roads have been damaged.

The severe cyclonic storm Remal over Koyra, Khulna has now moved northwards and weakened into a land deep depression over Jessore and adjoining areas.

It is likely to move northeastwards further and weaken into a land depression by giving precipitation gradually, said a special weather bulletin by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department on Monday.

Maritime ports of Payra and Mongla have been advised to lower danger signal no 10 and hoist local cautionary signal no 3.

Meanwhile, maritime ports of Cox's Bazar and Chittagong have been advised to lower danger signal no 9 and hoist local cautionary signal no 3.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter until Tuesday morning and proceed cautiously.
