Chairman of Jatiya Party (JaPa) GM Quader, also the opposition leader of the National Parliament, said that the quota system in government jobs will destroy Bangladesh’s pursuit of a discrimination-free society.
He made these remarks at the closing speech of the 2024-2025 budget session of the 12th National Parliament on Wednesday evening at National Parliament amid the ongoing protest of students of different universities and colleges of Dhaka at Shahbagh intersection for the second day protesting the reinstatement of the quota system in government jobs.
“In the name of the spirit of the Liberation War, the permanent settlement of a large quota system for recruitment in government jobs will destroy the main objective of independence which was to create a society based on justice without any discrimination.”
“Any form of division among the general people of the country never yields any good result,” said GM Quader.
The JaPa leader said: “We should not forget that the history of our country proved that the people are ready to accept any sacrifice to win the struggle against discrimination.”
“Our main achievement of the Liberation War is our constitution which talks about equality of opportunity. Our national memorial is a symbol of our commitment to build a nation based on justice and non-discrimination,” added GM Quader.
Regarding the quota system GM Quader said: “Until 2018, there were 56% quotas in the recruitment of first class, second class, third class, and fourth class government jobs in Bangladesh. Among them, 30% quota was for freedom fighters family members, 10% for women, 10% for residents of backward districts, 5% for minority ethnic groups, and 1% for the physically challenged. The remaining 44% were recruited based on merit.”
He said: “In 2018, the student movement demanded to abolish the freedom fighter quota system in first, second, third and fourth class in government jobs. Following thier movement, the Ministry of Public Administration issued a circular canceling the policy of all quota systems in the recruitment of all first and second-class government jobs. But the quota system remains as like as before in the third and fourth class government jobs,”
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury presided over the session.
