Cyclone Remal: Elections in 19 upazilas suspended

Sixth upazila parishad elections in four phases


Elections in 19 upazila parishad have been postponed due to Cyclone Remal.

Election Commission Secretary Md Jahangir Alam gave this information at his office in Election Commission in the capital’s Agargaon on Monday afternoon.

The elections were scheduled to be held on Wednesday.

The upazila parishad elections which have been suspended are - Sarankhola, Morrelganj and Mongla in Bagerhat; Koyra in Khulna, Paikgachha and Dumuria; Gaurnadi and Agailjhara in Barisal; Sadar upazila in Patuakhali, Mirzaganj and Dumki; Mathbaria in Pirojpur; Tazumuddin and Lalmohan in Bhola; Rajapur and Kathalia in Jhalakathi; Bamna and Patharghata in Barguna and Baghaichhari in Rangamati.

A total of 112 upazila parishad elections in the country were scheduled to be held in the third phase on Wednesday. Of these, 19 upazila parishad elections have been postponed.

EC Secretary Jahangir Alam said Cyclone Remal hit the coastal region of Bangladesh. As a result, it is asked to show the emergency signal numbers 9 and 10 in various places.

According to the information received so far, floodwaters have entered these constituencies, embankments have breached and water has entered the localities, trees have been uprooted by cyclones, and electricity has been disconnected.

Taking all these into consideration, according to the information received by the deputy commissioner and divisional commissioners, the Election Commission has announced the postponement of the 19 upazila parishad elections for the time being.

He also said that the voting has been postponed on the recommendation of the field administration.

The sixth upazila parishad elections are being held in four phases. In the first phase, voting was held in 139 upazila parishads of the country on May 8. In the second phase, voting was held in 160 upazilas on May 23. In the third phase, 112 constituencies were supposed to go to polls on May 29, but now there will be 90 constituencies. In the fourth phase, 56 upazila parishad elections will be held on June 5.
