Cargo ship capsizes in in Bay of Bengal, 12 sailors adrift

Sailors seek help from national emergency number 999
A cargo ship, named “MV Mou Moni” capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Hatiya of Noakhali district on Thursday.
The incident happened near Bhasan Char, on the eastern side of Hatiya upazila.
Md Mehedi Zaman, in-charge of Hatiya River police, confirmed the matter.
Twelve sailors of the sunken ship were drifting in the sea till filing this report on Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, immediately after the accident, the sailors called the national emergency service number 999 seeking help.
The Hatiya Naval Police and Coast Guard were later informed by 999 to help them.
Immediately after receiving the news, two teams of Hatiya Coast Guard and Nalchira Naval Police left Nalchira ghat to rescue the sailors.
Mehedi Zaman said that the incident took place in the estuary of the sea. “We are going to the spot with a trawler. The river is very turbulent. It will take us time to reach the spot. But till the last news, the sailors are all floating holding top of the sunken ship.”
Meanwhile, a team of Hatiyaa Coast Guard has rushed to the spot with a trawler.
According to sources, it will take 1-2 hours to reach the spot.
On behalf of the ship's owner, Mohammad Ohayedul Islam said that the incident occurred due to inclement weather.
The ship was going to Dhaka with goods from Chittagong. There were 12 sailors, he added.
