Election Commission is doing what it needs to do, says EC Alamgir

Election Commissioner (EC) Md Alamgir has said that no decision has been taken yet on the cancellation of candidature over the issue of violation of the electoral code of conduct.

"Cases are being filed locally in some areas over the ongoing clashes between followers of candidates in different parts of the country. However, no decision has yet been taken to cancel the candidature of any candidate,” he said while talking to journalists at the Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman said tough decisions like cancellation of candidacy were possible.

Md Alamgir said the returning officer, executive and judicial magistrates, local police and administration are strictly adhering to the code of conduct.

Mentioning that the Election Commission is doing what it needs to do,  he said the commission directly called Amir Hossain Amu and he responded to the notice.

Amu explained his side and said that he would be more careful, Election Commissioner Md Alamgir said.

Regarding Comilla Awami League candidate AKM Bahauddin Bahar, the election commissioner said: "It was asked to submit a report within 24 hours. We'll see when the report comes. The Election Inquiry Committee has served him three show-cause notices.”

On Saturday, Election Commissioner Anisur Rahman vowed to take action if the upcoming 12th parliamentary polls is obstructed.

Expressing concern over polls violence, Anisur Rahman said that decisions will be taken including cancelling candidatures, in case of receiving complaints.

There will be no consideration of whether the candidates are heavyweight or lightweight, he added.

He added that the Election Commission will also take action if any leaflets are distributed, which may discourage voters from going to polling stations.

Anisur Rahman said the election commission considers everyone the same. In that case, the commission has decided to take a neutral stand. The 12th national polls is scheduled to be held on January 7.
