Appellate Division cancelles Simin Hossain Rimi’s application
The Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the candidature of the independent candidate Alam Ahmed for the Gazipur- 4 constituency.
The Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan rejected the appeal filed by Awami League nominated candidate Simin Hossain Rimi against the candidature of independent candidate Alam Ahmed.
Barrister Tania Amir stood for Rimi in the court while senior advocate Probir Neogi appeared for Alam. Barrister Khan Mohammad Shamim Aziz represented the Election Commission in the court.
The returning officer cancelled the candidature of Alam Ahmed, an independent candidate, adviser of Krishak League and nephew of Tajuddin Ahmed, on charges of being a loan defaulter during the scrutiny.
He later appealed to regain his candidacy. The Election Commission rejected Alam Ahmed's application to validate his candidacy in the appeal hearing on December 13. Then he filed a writ petition in the High Court in this regard.
On December 18, the High Court dismissed his writ. Later, he appealed to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court against the order. On December 19, the chamber court reinstated Alam Ahmed’s candidacy.
Later, the current MP Simin Hossain Rimi, daughter of Tajuddin Ahmed and Awami League’s nominated candidate, appealed to the Appellate Division to withdraw the order.
