Aedes mosquito larvae were found in 463 houses

A total of 18 wards of the two Dhaka city corporations are at high risk of dengue, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

This information was given at a meeting to inform the results of the pre and post-season Aedes surveys by the DGHS in Mohakhali on Tuesday.

The surveys indicate that the impact of dengue has increased in the capital before the start of the season this year.

A pre-season survey was conducted from April 17 to April 26 to monitor the density and breeding place of Aedes mosquito, the carrier of dengue.

According to the DGHS survey, Aedes mosquito larvae and pupa (a life stage of insects) were found in 463 houses out of 3,152 houses surveyed in both city corporations.

Of these, mosquito larvae and pupa were found in 42.33% of the multi-storey buildings, 21.6% of houses, 21.6% in under-construction buildings, 12.74% in semi-pucca houses and 1.73% in vacant places.

The "Bruto Index" is the standard measure used to determine the density of Aedes mosquito larvae. A larval density exceeding 10% on the Bruto Index signifies an uncontrolled situation.

The risky wards of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) are 12, 13, 20, 36, 31, 32, 17 and 33.

On the other hand, the risky wards of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) are 4, 13, 52, 54, 16, 3, 5, 15, 17, and 23.

According to the DGHS, DNCC’s ward no 12 is the most risky as the Bruto Index of Aedes in this ward was found to be 43.33%.

Besides, the highest Bruto Index was found to be at 73.33% at ward no 13 of DSCC.
