Opposition parties, including Gono Odhikar Parishad (Nur-Rashed) and Gantantra Mancha, have called for a 48-hour hartal on Sunday in protest against the announcement of the poll schedule.

They rejected the schedule and vowed to continue protesting against the government’s decision to carry on with the election process.

Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur announced the 2-day hartal after a protest march in support of the blockade demanding the resignation of the government and elections under a non-partisan government on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Ganatantra Mancha announced their hartal in a press release signed by Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Senior Joint General Secretary Kamal Uddin Patwari on behalf of the alliance on Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal on Wednesday announced the schedule for the 12th parliamentary elections, with the polls set to be held on January 7.

According to the fire service, miscreants set fire to 12 vehicles including buses, trucks, trains, human haulers, and covered vans across the country since the announcement of the schedule till 9am on Thursday.
