A patient's father died in an elevator accident at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur on Tuesday night.

The deceased is Zahidul Islam, 40, of Daudkandi upazila in Comilla.

His baby was undergoing treatment at the hospital at the time of the incident, which occurred around 11:30pm.

Ayub Hossain, an Ansar member stationed at the hospital, said: “We rushed to the scene after hearing about the accident. Zahidul was found in a bloody state on the ground floor of the elevator. The lift had been malfunctioning for several days, but the authorities neither fixed it nor warned anyone.”

Witnesses said that Zahidul had admitted his sick child to the infant ward on the 10th floor. Around 11:30pm, Zahidul pressed the elevator button to go down. When the doors opened, there was no elevator car inside, but he stepped forward and fell, dying on the spot. His sister-in-law and others nearby narrowly avoided the same fate.

A relative of another patient in the infant ward said: “Zahidul and I had been sharing the ward for a few days. I had just returned from tea when I heard that he had fallen down the elevator shaft. His sister-in-law was screaming. We all rushed down and found him, but he was already dead. The elevators had been malfunctioning for days, but no one took action.”

Dr Manzoor Morshed, from the hospital's emergency department, confirmed: “We heard someone had fallen from the lift. The body was brought to us, and we sent it to the morgue.”

Aminul Islam, director of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, expressed sorrow over the incident: “It is deeply tragic. We are aware that the elevator was not functioning properly, and we will conduct a thorough investigation to determine how this accident occurred.”

On May 12, a patient named Mumtaz, 50, died after becoming trapped in an elevator. Besides, on May 3, another patient, Zillur Rahman, 70, died after falling through a gap next to the elevator on the hospital’s 12th floor.
