Allegedly asked other candidates to step aside from the polls

A writ petition has been filed in the High Court over the alleged involvement of State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Zunaid Ahmed Palak in the Singra Upazila Parishad election in Natore.

The writ sought directives to take action against State Minister Palak, to postpone the uncontested Singra upazila election schedule and announce a new one.

The High Court bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah is set to hear the writ Sunday.

Earlier, several newspapers published stories on the state minister interfering with the polls for his brother-in-law Lutful Habib Rubel. He is the joint general secretary of the upazila Awami League and chairman of Sherkole Union Parishad.

State Minister Palak allegedly asked other candidates to step aside from the election to ensure Rubel's victory unopposed. Another candidate was allegedly gifted a pond.

On the other hand, another candidate was abducted and tortured for not following instructions.

The Upazila Parishad elections will proceed in phases, with 150 and 160 upazilas expected to vote in the first and second phases respectively. Phase three, involving 112 upazilas, is scheduled for May 29, followed by the fourth phase on June 5.
