Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Demands Rescue Efforts and Aid for Sylhet Flood Victims
Expressing deep concern over the severe flood situation in the Greater Sylhet region, Professor Mujibur Rahman, Naib Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has called for immediate government action to rescue those stranded by floodwaters.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, urged the authorities to provide safe shelter, dry food, cash, medicine, medical supplies, and dispatch medical teams to the affected areas.
"I am deeply concerned about the overall flood situation in the Sylhet region due to the hill slopes coming down from upstream and continuous heavy rains," Naib Amir stated. He appealed to the public and various organizations to support the flood victims.
The flooding in the Surma and Kushiara basins of Sylhet has been exacerbated by incessant heavy rains and hill slopes from upstream. The situation has escalated, with approximately 135,000 people becoming waterlogged and nearly half a million people trapped by floodwaters in Sylhet city alone.
The crisis extends beyond Sylhet, affecting Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, and other districts where a total of 135,000 individuals are stranded. Crops, orchards, and seedbeds have been submerged, and livestock are at risk. Additionally, low-lying areas in Netrakona, Sherpur, Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha, and other districts have been inundated, with the flood situation expected to worsen.
"It is necessary to rescue the people trapped in water in flood-prone areas, including Greater Sylhet, and shelter them in safe higher places," Mujibur Rahman emphasized. He demanded urgent government intervention to provide essential supplies and medical assistance to the flood-affected people. He also called on leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, charitable organizations, and citizens to fully support the flood victims.
The situation remains critical, and coordinated efforts are essential to mitigate the impact on the affected communities.
