Road crashes claim 34 lives during Eid holidays

3 of a family among 8 people die in road accidents in Mymensingh


At least 34 people, including children, died in road crashes during Eid-ul-Fitr holidays across the country. 

On Sunday, a couple were killed when they were hit by a bus. They had been attending a wedding feast earlier. The mishap occurred on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway in Gazipur's Kaliakair Upazila.

The deceased are Asif Mahmud Hridoy, 26, and his wife Tanzim Bakshi, 21.

The same day, a rickshaw-puller died when he was hit by a truck in the sluice gate area of Gabtali Beribandh in the capital. 

Meanwhile, the death toll from a collision between two motorcycles in Zakiganj Upazila of Sylhet rose to four with the death of another victim on Sunday.

Zakiganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Javed Masud confirmed the casualty. 

On Friday, two motorcycles collided and subsequently caught fire in Shahbagh Muhidpur area on the Sylhet-Zakiganj road, leaving two people dead on the spot and two others injured.

In another crash, two motorcyclists were killed when a bus hit them in Bahubal Upazila of Habiganj on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway. The accident took place at 9.30pm on Saturday.

In Rajshahi, at least five people were killed and several others sustained injuries in separate road accidents on Friday and Saturday.

Police said the deceased were identified as Rony Sheikh, 24, Raju Ahmed, 20, Shanto Hossain, 20, Fahim Islam, 21, and Azizul Islam, 18.

In Narsingdi, at least six people were killed and several others sustained injuries in separate accidents on Eid day.

In Tangail, two friends were killed and another was injured following a collision between a motorcycle and a private car in Madhhupur area on Saturday.

The identities of the victims could not be identified immediately, Molla Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Madhupur police station, said.

In Chuadanga, two people died and another person was injured after their motorcycle hit a tree in Alamdanga Upazila early Sunday.

In Mymensingh, eight people died in separate road accidents, including three from the same family, and at least ten people have been injured.

The accidents took place on April 9 on the Mymensingh-Jamalpur Highway. Of them, three people from the same family died in Montola, four in Trishal, and one in Tarakanda.

The deceased have been identified as Lutfar Rahman, 30, his wife Shahnaz, 25, and son Mahit, 2.

Their other son Mojahid, 6, was injured. The name of the deceased in Trishal is Maruf, 30 and a person in Tarakanda.

In Comilla, a child was killed when an auto-rickshaw hit him in the Shaktala area. Local people said the child was carrying Iftar for his father when the vehicle hit him and threw him on the sidewalk where there was a pile of construction material.
