No casualties reported

A fire that broke out in the Gausia kitchen market in Rupganj, Narayanganj, has been brought under control after two hours of effort.

According to the fire service and local sources, the fire started in the market around 3:30am on Sunday. After being alerted, multiple units of the fire service reached the spot and started their operation around 3:45am.

Eight fire service units from Kanchan, Araihazar, Adamjee EPZ, and Demra stations of Rupganj brought the fire under control around 5:45am.

Around 100 shops were burned in the incident. However, no casualties were reported.

Narayanganj Fire Service Deputy Assistant Director Fakhruddin Ahmed said: “Our eight firefighting units worked to bring the fire under control. The operation is ongoing.”

Fire Service Deputy Director (Dhaka) and incident commander Md Saleh Uddin said: "After receiving the fire alert at Gausia kitchen market at 3:35am, units from Kanchan and Araihazar Fire Stations arrived and began controlling the fire. Later, eight units from Adamjee EPZ and Demra fire stations joined to control the fire. The fire is under control with no chance of spreading. No one has been injured in this incident. The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage will be determined after an investigation."

Referring to the reason for the rapid spread of the fire in the kitchen market, he said: “The market was made of tin sheds and each shop was being shuttered. The fire service team entered the shops by cutting the shutters and locks of most of the shops and extinguished the fire taking significant risks. Although it was a kitchen market, there were different types of shops including lubricants and petrol, hardware, and tyre tubes in this market. As a result, the fire spread very quickly.”

A probe committee would be formed to identify the cause of the fire, the fire service officer said, adding that they faced difficulties in bringing the fire under control due to overcrowding of people
