Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said that the Awami League has a zero-tolerance policy for misconduct.
The Awami League leader made the statement in response to a question about negative activities within the student wing of the ruling party at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Saturday night.
“Not everyone in a party can be virtuous, but we do not condone wrongdoing. Any criminal activity should be dealt with according to the law. No one has been spared for committing crimes while we are in power,” he added.
Quader was speaking at a press conference at the Awami League President’s Office in Dhanmondi, Dhaka, on Monday.
A leader of the ruling party’s student wing has been arrested in connection with the rape of a married woman at the JU campus.
The prime accused, Mustafizur Rahman, a student of the 45th batch of the International Relations Department of JU and the Chhatra League’s international affairs secretary of the university’s Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall unit, was remanded Sunday afternoon.
Following the incident, Mustafizur was expelled from the student organization’s JU unit based on the allegations raised against him.
As news of the incident broke on Saturday night, it sparked protests on the campus and demonstrations started to intensify from yesterday morning, with reactions pouring in from outside the university too.
Her husband filed a case with Ashulia police station the same night, naming six people.
At least 573 women and girls were raped across Bangladesh in 2023, according to the rights group Ain o Salish Kendra.
