Razzaque said BNP leaders were offered to be released

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said Agriculture Minister Abdur Razzaque's recent comment on the arrest of BNP leaders and activists is his personal opinion.

The general secretary of the party said this at a press briefing at the political office of the Awami League president in Dhanmondi on Monday.

In a recent interview with television channel Channel 24, Abdur Razzaque said BNP leaders were offered to be released from jail to bring them to the polls. However, the BNP did not accept the proposal.

In this regard, Obaidul Quader said Awami League is not a bankrupt party. “Awami League does not break the rules of the party and destroy its commitment to democracy.”

Criticizing the statement of 40 intellectuals of the country on the upcoming 12th parliamentary election, Obaidul Quader said: "Those who are talking about the election without calling for an end to arson are agents of BNP. These intellectuals are implementing BNP's political agenda.”

Obaidul Quader added that a total of 27 parties are taking part in the election so far and the number of candidates is 1,886. There are 357 independent candidates.

He also mentioned that all preparations for the election are underway.

On Sunday, Muhammad Abdur Razzaque said the BNP declined an offer to participate in the upcoming election in exchange for the immediate release of its detained leaders.

The seasoned politician said authorities had made various efforts to encourage the BNP's participation in the election.

According to the minister, the detention of BNP leaders was strategically planned to maintain stability in the country.

He argued that the presence of vehicles on the roads during hartals or strikes was evidence that the nation was unaffected by political turmoil. Razzaque questioned whether such normalcy could be observed if around 20,000 BNP leaders and activists had not been apprehended.
