Home owner said to be in critical condition
Three people, including two policemen, were injured in a crude bomb blast in a washroom in Barisal’s Gournadi upazila on Tuesday.
The incident occurred at a home in the Bara Kasba area at 10:30am.
The injured are Gournadi model police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kamal Hossain, Constable Md Mizan and home owner Masum Howlader. Of them, Masum is in critical condition.
Masum's relative Sentu Hawladar, who witnessed the incident, said: “Masum found an object resembling a cocktail in a shopping bag inside the bathroom. After reporting it to the national emergency service 999, Gournadi model police station was informed. The police, upon arriving, asked Masum to get the bag out, which exploded as he attempted to do so, causing injuries to him in various parts of his body.”
“The SI was injured in the leg, and another police member experienced hearing issues due to the loud explosion,” he added.
“Masum was immediately taken to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital by ambulance, and the police members were taken to Barisal Divisional Police Hospital,” Sentu said.
Gournadi model police station Inspector Mazharul Islam said: "Masum lives alone in his house, which has three bathrooms, two of which were unusable. The one in use is usually locked, but Masum found it open in the morning. Upon inspection, he found a shopping bag, which, when opened, revealed an object wrapped in red tape resembling a bomb.
“A police team led by SI Kamal then visited the site, and the bag exploded upon opening, injuring Masum and Kamal, while another constable was left with hearing loss. The injured were sent to hospital."
He added: "There were likely multiple cocktails present, though the exact number is uncertain. An investigation is ongoing to determine who placed the cocktails and their motive. Preparations are underway to file a case against unidentified individuals over the incident."
He also said the police are working to identify and bring the involved parties to justice.
