Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday criticized the opposition BNP for seeking foreign countries' intervention in Bangladesh.

He made the comment as BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan sought help from “friendly countries” to what he said restore democracy in Bangladesh.

BNP boycotted the last general elections through which the ruling Awami League came to power for the fourth straight term.

"With the help of friendly countries, we have been able to make this country independent in a short period of time. Today, we seek the help of friendly countries to restore democracy in Bangladesh," Moyeen Khan said without naming any country.

Replying to a question, the foreign minister said BNP doesn't have confidence on people.

"That's why they do not seek help from the people, they seek help from outside," he said.

"It's for their (BNP's) survival."

The foreign minister said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stands on solid foundation. Awami League is deeply rooted in people. BNP's position is shaky. That's why they cannot trust people."

Earlier, Ambassador of UAE Abdulla Ali Abdulla Khaseif AlHmoudi called on the foreign minister.

The meeting followed the foreign minister's bilateral visit to UAE earlier this month.
