In the 2024 Indian elections, a significant number of celebrities secured impressive victories to become members of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s bicameral parliament.
These prominent figures managed to use their popularity and influence to win the trust and votes in their constituencies.
Dev Adhikari
Adikari is one of the most well-known faces in the West Bengal film industry. He won in Ghatal, West Bengal, with 52.4% of votes as a Trinamool candidate, against Hiran Chatterjee.
Hema Malini
Hema Malini is a respected actor in Bollywood. She clinched victory in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, as a BJP candidate with 53.3% of votes.
June Malia
Malia is another in the long list of celebrities who won a seat in West Bengal. She won 47.4% of votes in Medinipur as a Trinamool candidate in a neck-to-neck competition with the BJP.
Kangana Ranaut
Ranaut, known and criticized for her bold opinions, has now shifted her focus to politics. She received 52.9% of votes as a BJP candidate in Mandi, Himachal Pradesh.
Manoj Tiwari
Tiwari spent a good part of his life as a singer and actor in Bhojpuri films before entering politics. He won 53.1% of votes in North East Delhi from the BJP.
Rachana Banerjee
A popular face in West Bengal, Banerjee is known for her charming personality as a TV host, who managed to win the Hooghly seat with 46.3% of votes, against Locket Chatterjee. She is a Trinamool member.
Ravi Kishan
Kishan, who even today, delivers fantastic performances in movies like “Laapataa Ladies,” also performed greatly in Gorakhpur with 50.7% of votes. He represents the BJP.
Satabdi Roy
Roy won the Birbhum seat in West Bengal with 47% of votes from Trinamool. She dominated commercial films in the state during her time as an actress as well as a film director.
Shashi Tharoor
Tharoor has been hailed by the public as an intellectual figure in the political landscape and eventually a celebrity who has gone beyond it with his writing and commentary. He was elected from the Congress with 37.2% of votes in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Shatrughan Sinha
Sinha, who has been a politician for decades apart from his film career, represented Trinamool in Asansol, West Bengal. He received 46.5% of the votes and defeated his Congress counterpart.
Suresh Gopi
Gopi is known for his work in the Malayalam film industry. He won in Thrissur as a BJP candidate with 37.8% of votes. His win is the only seat that the BJP gained in Kerala, making it a historic victory for the party.
Yusuf Pathan
Pathan, a well-known figure in cricket, also managed to be an elected candidate. He received 37.9% of votes as a Trinamool candidate in Baharampur, West Bengal.
Celebrities who lost
Other known faces who could not grab victory are Smriti Irani and Raj Babbar. Irani, from the BJP, lost to the Congress’s Kishori Lal by a huge margin. Meanwhile, Babbar lost to the BJP’s candidate in Gurgaon, Haryana.
