Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner (DB) Mohammad Haroon Or Rashid has alleged that recent attacks and acts of destruction were strategically planned to undermine the police force under the pretense of the quota reform movement.
In a press conference held at the DMP Media Center on Thursday afternoon, Haroon Or Rashid claimed that the violence was orchestrated by the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami with the aim of destabilizing the democratic government and weakening the police's capacity to respond effectively. He described the attacks as a deliberate effort to demoralize the police and disrupt state functions.
“Planned killings and destruction were carried out under the guise of the quota reform movement,” Haroon Or Rashid asserted. “The BNP and Jamaat have repeatedly attempted to topple democratic governments and paralyze the country. Their repeated failures in these attempts have led them to target the police.”
The Additional Commissioner highlighted recent incidents, including the brutal assault and murder of two police officers by BNP and Jamaat cadres. He emphasized the historical role of the police as the first line of defense during crises and cited the attacks on state institutions and police targets as part of a broader strategy to weaken the state.
Haroon Or Rashid detailed specific incidents from October 28, where attackers targeted state institutions and police stations, including the residence of judges. He criticized the use of students as shields and noted the reward of 10,000 rupees announced for the killing of police officers.
The police official expressed deep sorrow over the loss of officers and reaffirmed the commitment of the police force despite the challenges. “The morale of the police has remained unshaken,” Haroon Or Rashid said. “We have lost three officers in this quota movement, but our resolve remains strong.”
In connection with the recent violence, the DB Police has arrested six individuals, including Masud Rana, the Demra Thana Chhatra Dal convener, who is alleged to be the mastermind behind the murder of the two policemen. The arrested individuals include Irfan, Abu Bakr, Rabiul Islam, Sourav Mia, and Tareq.
According to DB Police, the plan to attack and kill police officers was orchestrated under the leadership of Masud Rana. The suspects, who were apprehended based on concrete evidence and video footage analysis, are accused of organizing and participating in arson, attacking police stations, and spreading misinformation.
Haroon Or Rashid confirmed that the police are taking legal action against those involved in these crimes, including the transfer of funds and other related activities. He stressed that no matter where the perpetrators are, they will face justice.
