No one can be in power without polls, he says

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said he does not know much about the viral photos of BNP Vice-Chairman Major Hafiz Uddin and Magura-1 MP Shakib Al Hasan joining the Bangladesh Nationalist Movement (BNM) prior to the polls.

He said this at a press conference at the Awami League central office on Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital on Tuesday.

“Shakib won the election from Magura on an Awami League ticket. Before that, Shakib had no affiliation with our party. Upon receiving the nomination, he obtained primary membership and fulfilled the necessary conditions. That's how he was nominated and elected as an MP. I'm unaware of any further details,” he added.

Asked whether the government formed “King's Party” before the 12th parliamentary election, he said: "Why would the ruling party form a King's Party?”

Regarding BNP, he said: "For BNP, cooperation of a friendly country means putting them in power. We held an election. No one can be in power without polls.”

Earlier in the day, BNP Vice Chairman Major (retd) Hafizuddin Ahmed claimed that some of his former colleagues in the army brought cricketer Shakib Al Hasan to his home before the election.

The senior politician said two BNM members also introduced Shakib to him with intentions for political involvement, around four to five months before the election.

Recently, a Bangla daily published a report about Hafizuddin and Shakib Al Hasan. Hafizuddin claimed that the report was "fictitious.”

He said: "Shakib Al Hasan is the best player in the world. The retired officers brought him to my house. He (Shakib) intended to join politics. I said politics is your personal matter. He left after not getting encouragement.”
