The Government of Bangladesh has formally protested against the United States' statement concerning the quota reform movement in government jobs, which inaccurately reported two deaths.
In a statement on Tuesday, July 16, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Seheli Sabreen addressed the comments made by US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller regarding the ongoing protests.
Sabreen expressed disappointment, stating, "We are very disappointed with the response of US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller. The information given that two students were killed is baseless. The use of such unverified information may incite violence and undermine the efforts of the Bangladesh government."
She emphasized the importance of maintaining a peaceful environment to allow non-violent protests. "Freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are cornerstones of our democracy. The Bangladesh government is determined to uphold that right," Sabreen affirmed.
The spokesperson also highlighted the government's stance against violence in democracy and politics. Drawing a parallel with a recent incident in the US, she mentioned, "Recently, former US President Donald Trump's peaceful rally was attacked. We are deeply concerned about the incident. Such violence contradicts our values. Bangladesh's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister have separately condemned the attack."
Sabreen reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to working with the United States to uphold democracy and democratic values.
The protest by Bangladesh follows the US condemnation of the attacks on students advocating for quota reforms. US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller had stated that the US is aware of the widespread student protests in Bangladesh, including the capital Dhaka, and reported that hundreds were injured and two were killed in the attacks. "We are monitoring this matter," Miller said, stressing that freedom of expression and peaceful assembly are essential for a thriving democracy and condemning any form of violence against peaceful protesters.
Miller also extended condolences to the victims and those affected by the violence.
The Bangladeshi government's response underscores its stance on the issue, emphasizing the need for accurate information and peaceful dialogue.
