Bangladesh decided to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI) of India during the bilateral meeting of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her counterpart Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday.
“We welcome Bangladesh’s decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative,” Indian Prime Minister Modi reciprocated.
“We will also continue our cooperation in other regional and international forums, including Bimstec,” he said as both leaders had very “productive meetings” where they discussed politics and security, trade and connectivity, the sharing of water from common rivers, power and energy, and regional and multilateral cooperation, among other issues of mutual interest.
“We agreed to collaborate with each other for the betterment of our people and countries," Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said.
The Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative is a collaborative approach among stakeholders to address shared challenges.
It extends the "Security and Growth for All in the Region" (SAGAR) initiative initiated in 2015 by the Indian government.
Narendra Modi proposed it at the 14th East Asian Summit on November 4, 2019.
It aims to strengthen maritime boundaries and partnerships, focusing on free trade and sustainable resource usage. It encompasses seven thematic areas, including resource development, resilient infrastructure, security, and marine environment.
