BNP has failed in its movement to oust govt, Quader says

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said the government is not concerned about the BNP's reaction to the election, as its main concern is to keep the prices of commodities under control.

“No matter how many dramas the BNP stages, they do not have the support of the people,” Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said at a press briefing at Awami League president’s political office in Dhanmondi on Friday.

Quader said the BNP did not participate in the election and failed in its movement to oust the government. “They have to protect their face from their foreign friends now.”

Even after they boycotted the election, the voter turnout was 41.8% with the participation of 28 parties. “Various countries and organizations from all over the world have congratulated the prime minister and pledged to work together,” he added.

Quader said the United States also has not said the election was completely flawed, adding that US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas has congratulated the prime minister.

“The whole world is facing a challenge, which is visible in Bangladesh as well. Yesterday (Thursday) I saw that the remittance inflow had increased, but reserves had decreased. However, we are self-sufficient in agriculture.”

“Despite this unrest, there is no wailing among the people… I have not seen any revolts. Everyone is living a normal life,” he added.

He said the government is working on price control and implementation of the election manifesto. The prime minister has instructed the authorities concerned to pay more attention to work, Quader added.

The BNP is not participating in the upcoming local government elections for fear of losing, Quader said, adding that the BNP has lost its relevance.
