At least 16 incidents of arson took place across Bangladesh in over 24 hours till Wednesday morning during a three-day road, railways and waterways blockade enforced by the BNP, Jamaat and their allies.
Sources at the media cell of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters said they received information about 16 arsons across the country.
The reports of the fires reached the fire service control room from 6am on Tuesday till 9am on Wednesday.
Among the arsons, four occurred in Dhaka city (Postogola, Khilgaon, Baridhara), six in Dhaka division (Savar, Gazipur), and three each in Chittagong (Karnaphuli, Rangunia) and Rajshahi (Bogra, Sirajganj) divisions.
Nine buses, two covered vans, two trucks, one pickup van, two showrooms and one police box were burned, the fire service media cell said.
The three-day blockade began on Tuesday to mount pressure on the Awami League government to quit and hold the next election under a non-party, neutral administration.
