Says candidates must win through competition
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said his party cannot guarantee victory for any of its allies in the upcoming 12th national election, noting that all candidates must win through competition.
Quder, also the road transport and bridges minister, was speaking to reporters at a press briefing in Dhaka on Friday afternoon.
Regarding the demand of the Awami League’s partners in the 14-party alliance of more than seven seats in the polls, Quader said: “Candidates must win through competition. There is no scope for giving away more than seven seats.”
He further said independent candidates will not be given any concessions in the elections either.
Quader said this election will set a record for being fair, with no biases involved.
He also accused the BNP of trying to sabotage the election by acquiring weapons.
According to the election schedule, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 17. After that, the number of final candidates will be known.
Returning officers will allot electoral symbols on December 18. The candidates will then go on to hold their election campaigns, which will continue till 8am on January 5.
The election is set to be held on January 7.
