Civil surgeon beleives they were due to a gastrointestinal disease

A seven-member medical team has started providing door-to-door treatment for those suffering from fever, hemoptysis and abdominal pain following the death of five people since January in Thega Chandabi Ghat village of Bhushanchhara union in Barkal upazila of Rangamati.

The team, led by Barkal Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Mong Kyshing Sagar, divided into three groups and started the treatment on Thursday.

From last January to March 17, five people died due to fever, hemoptysis and abdominal pain.

Civil Surgeon Dr Nihar Ranjan Nandi said: "The members of the medical team arrived on Thursday afternoon and are providing healthcare to the affected people. They are examining the signs and symptoms of the disease and providing them with the necessary treatment.”

“From the symptoms and signs, I beleive they are suffering from a gastrointestinal disease. Since there is vomiting, it may be due to their eating habits,” he added.

“After learning about the signs and symptoms of those who have died, I realized that they died due to frequent vomiting and lack of timely treatment. No one would have died if he had received treatment at the right time instead of depending on traditional healers,” the doctor continued.

The civil surgeon said: “The medical team has been instructed to bring those who are seriously ill to the upazila health complex or the district hospital. We do not want anyone else to lose their lives.”

Preeti Shankar Dewan, member of Bhushanchhara union parishad, and Shiv Ratan Chakma, the village head, said that there are 86 families in Thega Chandabi Ghat. Many of them are suffering from fever, hemoptysis and abdominal pain. At present there is extreme fear among the villagers. There are no clinics or medical service centres around the area.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Forkan Anupam Elahi said the upazila administration is keeping tabs on the issue. “Apart from this, as the area is near the border, efforts are being made to provide round-the-clock assistance by the BGB.”
