Hasnat Abdullah: Dhaka College students are enough to overthrow Chhatra League

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement holds a mass gathering at Zero Point in the capital on Sunday, November 10, 2024.

Hasnat Abdullah, convener of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, declared that Dhaka College students alone are capable of toppling the Chhatra League.

“We are ready to face Chhatra League and Jubo League on the field,” he said, emphasizing the need for unity within their own ranks. “There’s no need for everyone to mobilize – Dhaka College students are enough,” he added.

Hasnat made this statement during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement’s mass gathering at Zero Point in the capital around 12:30pm on Sunday.

The mass rally demanded accountability for Awami League leaders. The gathering took place on the main road by the South Gate of Baitul Mukarram Mosque, drawing hundreds by noon at the Awami League central office and Gulistan’s Zero Point on Bangabandhu Avenue.

The “Fascism Prevention Forum” program began with another leader, Sarjis Alam, also present on stage.

Anti-discrimination activists chanted slogans against the Awami League, leading to traffic jams as roads from Zero Point towards Baitul Mukarram were blocked.

Sarjis Alam asserted that Gulistan’s Zero Point would remain out of reach for Chhatra League. He warned that if they attempted to spread misinformation, student activists would resist unitedly.

“They have no standing on the streets,” Sarjis said. “When they see students in the streets, they have no face to show. Over the last 16 years, they’ve whitewashed their own image and fled.”

Earlier, at around 9:30am, supporters gathered at Noor Hossain Square, where various organizations paid tribute with flowers.

Protest marches by groups, including the Paltan and Shahbagh Jubo Dal, were observed as they converged at the central office of the Awami League and Noor Hossain Square.

Following Awami League’s program announcement for Shaheed Noor Hossain Day on Saturday, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared a Facebook post underscoring the interim government’s strict stance.

Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan also issued a warning on Facebook, while Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam declared that the Awami League would be prevented from holding any public programs on the streets.

Since the student uprising on August 5, the Awami League has refrained from holding public programs.

However, for Shaheed Noor Hossain Day, the party called on leaders and workers to gather and march at Gulistan’s Zero Point at 3pm, as announced on their Facebook page.
