Flash flood: Three more upazilas inundated in Sylhet

Surma, Kushiara rivers above danger marks in three points


Due to heavy rainfall on Tuesday night, floodwater on Wednesday inundated three more upazilas- Golapganj, Beanibazar and Bishwanath- in Sylhet, causing immense suffering to the people.

However, the flood situation in Sylhet City Corporation and other areas remains stable.

Sylhet Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Shah Sajib Hossain said that Sylhet recorded 143.4mm rainfall in the previous 24 hours till 6am on Wednesday.

The rainfall in the previous 24 hours on Tuesday was recorded at 52.2 mm.

According to the control room of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the Surma river was flowing above the danger level by 61 cm at Kanighat point, the Kushiara river at Amalsid by 18 cm, and the Kushiara at Fenchuganj by 43 cm at noon.

However, the Surma river was flowing at Sylhet point below the danger mark by 6 cm.

A notification signed by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Russel Hasan informed that the overall flood situation is now stable.

The notification informed that the flood situation is being carefully monitored.

According to the control room of the DC office, 658,662 people have been affected by flood in Sylhet district. 

Besides, 842 villages were inundated in the flood. Some 4,555 people are currently staying at the shelter. Some 571 shelters have been prepared.
