Constable Monirul was killed in the Baridhara diplomatic zone on Saturday

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Tuesday said police were aware of Constable Kawsar Ahmed’s mental illness.

Constable Kawsar Ahmed shot Constable Monirul Islam dead in the Baridhara diplomatic zone on Saturday.

Speaking at a program at Rajarbag Police Line, the IGP said Constable Kawsar was deployed after a doctor said that he was fully fit for the job.

“But we will remain more cautious in the future,” he added.

On Monday, a three-member probe body was formed over the murder of Constable Monirul Islam.

Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Dr KM Mahid Uddin said the committee headed by the deputy commissioner (DC) of the Gulshan Division of DMP, has been formed to investigate the incident.

The committee will submit its report within seven days.

On Saturday night, Constable Monirul Islam was killed and two pedestrians were wounded when Constable Kawsar Ahmed opened fire near the Palestinian embassy.

Witnesses said they saw Monirul Islam and Kawsar Ahmed in a heated argument after 11pm.

During the altercation, Kawsar began firing indiscriminately, hitting Monirul in the chest and killing him instantly. He reportedly fired 38 rounds of bullets.

It took special police forces, including SWAT and the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), about half an hour to disarm and apprehend Kawsar.
