The project needs to be implemented quickly, he says

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Monday said that the inland waterway communication system will contribute effectively to reduce traffic jams.

“The rivers will regain their lost glory if the communication of riverine Bangladesh is started through rivers. At the same time the illegal occupiers will be freed,” said Nasrul Hamid.

The state minister came up with the remarks while speaking at a public rally before the laying of foundation stone of the “Subhadya canal re-excavation work under Keraniganj upazila of Dhaka district and development and protection of both banks of the canal project (first phase)” by the prime minister, connected virtually from Ganabhaban in the capital.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina virtually inaugurated 80 development schemes that included re-digging 430 small rivers, canals and water bodies and laying the foundation stone of 20 new development projects under the Water Resources Ministry.

Subhadya canal connects Buriganga and Dhaleswari rivers. If this canal regains its lost glory, it will have a positive impact on the area's trade, transport, health, recreation and people's livelihood. This canal can effectively contribute to modern waste management and environmental conservation, said Nasrul Hamid.

The project needs to be implemented quickly to maintain the proper flow and quality of water, said the state minister.

At this time, he further said that the canal will become popular in the future as an alternative to the Mawa road. The branches of this canal will also be renovated in phases.

The estimated cost of Subhadya canal re-excavation under Keraniganj upazila of Dhaka district and development and protection of both banks of the canal (first stage) has been fixed Tk317.59 crore.

The 14.26 km canal will be re-excavated in the first phase.

Besides, a 13.83 km walkway will be constructed with bank preservation.

Moreover, 2600 different types of trees will be planted.
