Bangladesh wants to celebrate golden jubilee of UN membership in befitting manner

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud has underscored the need for celebrating Bangladesh's membership at the UN in a befitting manner as 2024 marks the golden jubilee.
He made the comment in his maiden meeting with United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in Uganda on the sidelines of the NAM summit on Sunday.
He also invited Guterres to Bangladesh at the latter’s convenience, the foreign ministry said.
Bangladesh became a full member of the United Nation on September 17, 1974.
Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the then president of Bangladesh, gave a speech in the Bengali language at the General Assembly on September 25.
Antonio Guterres has once again congratulated Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and commended her leadership.
He appreciated Bangladesh’s vital role in the call for reforming global financial architecture, the foreign ministry said.
He also praised the prime minister for championing some UN-led global processes, the foreign ministry said.
On behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud commended the secretary general for his bold and crucial role with regard to the War in Gaza.
He also requested the secretary general to keep the Rohingya issue on the top of the UN’s agenda.
Dr Hasan Mahmud briefed the secretary general on the recently held elections in Bangladesh.
The foreign minister is leading the Bangladesh delegation to the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the Third South Summit of the G77 and China in Kampala, Uganda.
