Tangail family overjoyed as sailor freed from Somali pirate captivity

Was in captivity for just over a month
After 31 days, sailor Sabbir's family is overjoyed after hearing the news of his release from pirates in Somalia.
Sabbir Hossain, a sailor freed from the pirates of Somalia, is a resident of Danga Dhalapara village, Sohbatpur union, Nagarpur upazila, Tangail.
Sabbir's father Haroon Or Rashid told the Dhaka Tribune on Sunday: “We could not celebrate Eid; I used to wait for the news of my son’s release.”
“After hearing that everyone including my son has been released on TV, today seems like our Eid day. My son called me in the morning and informed me that he is fine,” he added.
Sabbir passed SSC from Sohbatpur High School in 2014 and HSC in 2016 from Kagmari MM Ali College in Tangail.
Then he joined the Bangladesh Marine Academy in Chittagong. After graduating, he took a job as a merchant officer on the ship MV Abdullah in June 2022.
Sabbir's mother Saleha Begum said Sabbir called her and asked her not to worry. He told her they were freed and everyone was fine. “After hearing this, my heart was full of joy.”
Sabbib's sister Mitu Akhtar said: “I still cannot say when he will come back to the country. Thanks to Allah, he was released safely.”
The MV Abdullah ship was captured by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean on March 12. Twenty-three sailors of that ship were taken hostage. The ship was carrying coal from Maputo port in Mozambique to Al Haramia port in the United Arab Emirates.
