Fakhrul: Interim govt to announce election framework after necessary reforms

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the interim government will announce the blueprint for the elections after implementing the necessary reforms.

He also expressed hope that the government would bring stability to the country soon.

The BNP leader spoke to reporters after a meeting with the Chief Advisor Dr Muhammad Yunus of the interim government.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that the discussion with the chief adviser was productive.

On Thursday, a three-member BNP delegation met with the chief advisor at the state suesthouse Jamuna.

After the one-and-a-half-hour meeting, Mirza Fakhrul addressed the press.

Mirza Fakhrul said: “We are very hopeful that under the leadership of the interim government and Professor Yunus, they will be able to bring the country to a stable condition quickly with their sincerity, discipline, and competence. At the same time, they will move towards holding elections and take necessary steps, which we believe.”

When asked if they had discussed potential dates for the elections with the political parties, Fakhrul responded: “They will discuss with political parties in due course. They will announce that.”

Regarding the possibility of any proposed election dates, Mirza Fakhrul said: “No, we have not mentioned any dates. They will decide the dates. We are not going to specify any dates.”

During the meeting, the BNP delegates mainly exchanged views on reform ideas in various areas of the incumbent government and their thoughts on elections, the chief adviser’s press wing said. 

The BNP leaders said they have full support for the steps taken by the interim government and will continue support for the future, too. 

They requested the government to announce the commencement of broader dialogues with political parties over reforms and polls as soon as possible.

The BNP delegates wanted to know about the state of the country’s economy and also agreed about fears and possibilities prevailing in the country’s economy.

Finally, they pledged that they would work together on the initiatives the government will take about reforms, elections and economy, and will be an integral part of its measures.

Advisers to the interim government Dr Asif Nazrul and Wahiduddin Mahmud, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and BNP Standing Committee members Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed, among others, were present on the occasion.
