Jagannath University (JnU) teachers went on a two-hour strike from 10am to 12pm on Tuesday, demanding the cancellation of the Universal Pension Scheme.

Despite the strike, departmental exams were conducted for the convenience of students.

The Jagannath University Teachers' Association called for this pre-announced program, making three demands to the government: the withdrawal of the discriminatory pension notification issued by the finance ministry, the inclusion of university teachers in the promised super grade, and the introduction of a separate pay scale for teachers.

After the strike, Sheikh Mashrik Hasan, general secretary of the Jagannath University Teachers' Association, said: “The government must accept our demands. The Universal Pension Scheme should be abolished. If our demands are not met, the Jagannath University Teachers' Association will join a program similar to the next program announced by the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers' Associations. We plan to strike from 8:30am to 1pm on June 4.”

On Sunday, the teachers organized a human chain at the university’s Shaheed Minar premises to demand the cancellation of the pension scheme, highlighting its negative impact.
