The High Court has scrapped a sedition case filed against BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman, Ekushey Television Chairman Abdul Salam and two others.

The High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain issued this order on Thursday.

The two other individuals are former chief reporter Mahathir Faruqui Khan and senior reporter Kanak Sarwar of Ekushey Television.

After Tarique Rahman's statement from London was broadcast live by Ekushey TV on January 5, 2015, Tejgaon police sought permission from the Ministry of Home Affairs to file a sedition case against him the following day.

After receiving approval from the ministry, Sub-Inspector Borhan Uddin of Tejgaon police station filed the case on January 8, 2015.

Following the investigation, Inspector Emdadul Haque pressed charges in court, naming Tarique Rahman and Abdul Salam along with Mahathir Faruqui Khan and Kanak Sarwar as defendants.

The case documents said by broadcasting Tarique Rahman's statement, the defendants conspired to spread false and fabricated information, posing a threat to the nation's sovereignty and attempting to incite hatred against the then government.
